Chinese Traditional Medicine – An Alternative to Heal Your Child

chinese traditional medicine

An alternative to western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine (popularly known as TCM) is an effective way to treat small children and infants.  Many TCM practitioners from the USA are not so confident in treating little children as opposed to naturopaths that are willing to treat the whole family, but in China, pediatrics is a part of TCM that has become so popular and it attracts the best of practitioners.  Some of them specialize in pediatric Tui Na massage, others in herbal remedies.

If you are interested, in the USA, the Holistic Pediatric Association is offering the necessary training in order to heal children, who respond well to this kind of treatment. Their recovery is almost predictable as their Qi and Yang helps in the recovery process. It is a positive thing both to the child and to the doctor.

Even though the dosage is different it is safe to say that almost all the medicine used for adults can be used to treat children, however, there are certain things to have in mind.  For example, herbs that are cooling, warming, bitter, or  pungent should be avoided.

Determining the right syndrome and its differentiation is the base of each treatment, and for children, a gentler approach is usually the right one. After the initial therapy, if the condition persists and is considered as severe, you can halt the treatment as soon as the first signs of recovery appear and let momentum lead them to the complete recovery.

Dosage Considerations

In order to determine the right dosage, the age of the child (infant) is taken into consideration, regardless of whether the medication is in powder, pills or liquid. The old Chinese medicine recommends these measures:

Newborns- 1/6 of the adult dosage

Babies- 1/3 to 1/2 of the adult dosage

Young children (2-5 years)- 1/2  to 2/3 of the adult dosage

School children- Adult dosage

To prepare it you can grind it in an electric coffee grinder and then place them back to their original packaging.
