It takes about a fifth of a second to fall in love.
When you fall in love, 12 areas of your brain release happy chemicals. So, in about a fifth of a second, the line between reality and fantasy blurs leaving you euphoric. That’s how science explains the process of falling in love.
But why do we celebrate romance and love on February 14th?
The history of Valentine’s Day
The history of Saint Valentine’s Day is somewhat obscure. The roots of the festival trace back to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility commemoration and a purification ritual, which turned from a pagan feast into a Christian feast day circa 496.
Valentine’s Day is surrounded by many fanciful legends with three Christian saints by that name: a priest in Rome, a bishop in Terni and a third St. Valentine of whom we know nothing about.
One legend speaks about a priest who secretly performed marriage ceremonies even though the Roman emperor Claudius II had prohibited marriage. Another legend says that St. Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. The most popular story focuses on Christian love (agape) and St. Valentine, who refused to renounce his religion.
In the 14th century, when Chaucer composed a poem (in 1381) honoring the engagement between England’s Richard II and Anne of Bohemia, this feast was first linked with romance and love.
The holiday evolved over the centuries and gift-giving became popular in England by the 18th century. Today, Valentine’s Day is probably the most celebrated festival of romantic love, and although not even a holiday in most of the countries, it is celebrated all around the world.
However, we do express and share love and appreciation every day, but every year, this holiday makes us excited and inspires a special romantic atmosphere for all of us.
Sometimes, this holiday can also be stressful; some people put too much effort into organizing activities for this day and along the way forget to enjoy it.
In case you’ve been too busy and missed the signs your partner has been sending you for the past 10 days, Valentine’s Day is only 5 days away, so it might be the right time to start planning something memorable.
And if you are out of ideas, I decided to create a list of the things you can do this year to ensure an awesome weekend.
How to make this Valentine’s Day perfect?
Do something you have never done before – this is a great idea to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year. Apart from doing something for the first time, you and your dearest person are spending more quality time together, creating memories.
Massage is a perfect way to relax and de-stress, and it’s a great pleasure for both the giver and the receiver. Unless you already know how to massage, you will need a little time to search online for a different kind of massages, and learn a few tricks. Whether you do it properly or not, what counts is the atmosphere: candles, aromatic oils and romantic lighting. A massage is an art form that lets you reconnect with your partner in many ways.
Stir poker (or other similar card game) is a great way to have fun and spice the atmosphere a bit. If you don’t know how to play poker, there’s your chance to learn. However, don’t get too competitive, you are both winners.
This year you can write love letters. Have you ever received a love letter? Have you ever written one? Nothing says romance like a love letter. Don’t rely on famous poems or cheesy song lyrics, the idea is to write a meaningful message or to share a memory.
Recreating your first date is a perfect way to reflect on your love. Take a walk down memory lane and re-live your first date or your first kiss, go back to where it all started, whether it’s a café or venue, and enjoy the romance. If you, however, have just started dating, you can recreate a date from your favorite movie. Luckily, you can choose from many great romantic movies.
Some may argue that nothing says love like food. If you agree, this year you can have fun cooking together. Foodies know best how delicious food can heat the atmosphere, and if both of you enjoy cooking, then it’s the perfect occasion to cook something delicious together. You can make chocolate, for instance, or you can choose to make delicious aphrodisiac deserts.
Learn something new. Do you want to learn to dance? Or to cook perhaps? Whatever you want to learn, the idea is to have a lot of fun and learn a new skill. Book a class to learn something completely new together. If you can’t afford it, you can try to find some interesting online courses. Or, instead of spending money on an expensive bottle of champagne, you can go to a tasting class.
Turn off your phones, pick a picnic basket, prepare snacks and your favorite drink, and go on a picnic. If you can’t find somewhere great to share lunch, you can spend a whole day building a fort in your living room. Light some candles and spend some quality time under the fort.
For those who have a little different understanding of the word romance, yet wish to have fun and enjoy the weekend, a scary movie night is an exciting option. The good thing about a scary movie night is that you have someone special to hug throughout the terrifying scenes.
Finally, if you wish to have the most memorable Valentine’s Day, make sure you show your love in every possible way. You can do many things to express your love, and do not hesitate to do so, but this holiday should remind you that every day is a perfect day to celebrate love.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
